C-SPA 2012 Splash-in
** Flying - Food - Fun **

The C-SPA 2012 Fall Splash-In was held over the weekend of September 21-23. The event was a coordinated Cascade to Coast multi destination weekend of food, friends, and adventure with new experiences for all.  The two locations included a high Cascades lake resort and a coastal lake BBQ each being located near airports to encourage both wheel and float enthusiasts looking to spend either a weekend or just planning a day trip of flying in western Oregon.  Here is how it played out.

The weekend started off at the Crescent Lake Resort at the top of the Cascades on Friday night.  Dave and Karen Wellman arrived early to provide auto support to those wheel bound craft wishing to fly in and land at the newly renovated Crescent Lake airfield (5S2) and to set the stage for the weekend.  The cabins are rustic, yet clean and comfortable.  The restaurant serves meals, or you could cook in the kitchen in your cabin.  The Forest Service campground next to the resort is available on a first come first serve basis with tent sites right next to the quiet and protected pumice gravel beach.  We settled in quickly and had a great afternoon walking around the nearby campground and shoreline of the lake.  Cliff and Marni Gerber splashed down in their RV 7 amphib after escaping Portland and the valley slog to enjoy a warm and sunny afternoon lakeside at the Resort.  Delicious hors d'oeuvres were served at 4:00 overlooking the lake.

Kayaking at Crescent Lake Resort

Saturday arrived to a full and spectacularly blue and warm day in the Cascades.  Truly an Oregon end of summer treat.  All enjoyed hiking along the lakeside, kayaking, photography, fishing, napping, and reading in and around the enjoyable and scenic resort.  Geoff and Jan Stevenson splashed down in their 185 amphib just in time for the afternoon pot luck hors d'oeuvres. Dinner was served at the restaurant in the early evening with a great view from the outdoor patio.  The Resort fire pit took the chill off with of course, more stories and tales until way after dark.

Anxious skies from the night before awoke to be clear with a few clouds around, but not near enough to curb the enthusiasm of the intrepid aviators. The day's flight plan included a quick look at Waldo Lake and then on to the BBQ at Woahink Lake Seaplane Base (IO0) near Florence.  The ground crew (Dave and Karen Wellman) took off on all four to meet any land planes that would arrive at the Florence airport (6S2) and shuttle them over to the BBQ event hosted by Greg and Jan Murphy at their float plane friendly Vacation Rental Lodge on the lake.

The Waldo experience included a smooth landing near the east side beach, which by the way is very shallow for a long way out.  Both planes grounded out quite a way off the shoreline requiring those wearing long pants to get a lot more than the pant leg cuff a bit damp.   A magical and pleasant hike through the woods made the side trip all the more unique and a special treat.

The weather at Woahink Lake was one of those superlative autumn coastal days with light winds, high clouds, and warm temps.  Everett Mellish splashed down with two friends in his Sportsman amphib just as a delicious lunch was being served.  Local float plane legendary and long time Florence flyer Floyd Dolan entertained the group with pictures and stories, while Jan Murphy proved through pictures her ability to water ski behind anything that floats, even if powered by a propeller.  Our hats are off to Greg and Jan Murphy for sharing their waterfront home and hosting a superb BBQ lunch and fly-in event.

Families, friends and flyers had a great weekend retreat enjoying each other and what Oregon has to offer.  Plan to join the event next year as it is sure to attract more welcome attention.  Stay tuned to the C-SPA website for more details.  Better yet, join the group and get the newsletter on line.  See the website details on how to join.
